FAQ’s Surf Camp

I want a customised surf camp package, is it possible?

Of course, just get in touch with us via our contact page and tell us which options you would like to book. We’ll get back to you with an individual package within short time.

I want to stay less than 7 days, is that possible?

Our surf camp experience is shaped to a minimum stay of 7 days, therefore we don’t recommend to stay fewer days. If you wish to receive more information, feel free to get in touch with us.

Is is possible to arrive on any day?

In low season (from 23 May - 4 July and from 22 August - 26 September) you can choose your arrival day. In high season (from 4 July - 22 August) our fixed arrival and departure day is on Saturdays.

I’m travelling alone, can I book a private accommodation?

For single travellers we recommend a stay in one of our shared tipi tents. They are very spacious and give you enough room to store your stuff and meet other globe trotters!

I’m travelling with a baby, is the camp accustomed for that?

In the family camp you will find high chairs and baby beds, in the sanitary block there is a baby bath and a changing table. You can access the open guest kitchen in case you need to prepare any special meals for your little one.

Where is the closest shopping opportunity?

On the campsite you’ll find a little supermarket where you can buy all essential groceries. The little town Apúlia is a 30 minute walk away from the campsite and offers little shops, restaurants and bars if you want to explore the close-by area. Our surf camp bar has a big variety of drinks from around Europe, too.

Where is the next ATM?

The closest ATM is about 3km away, therefore we recommend to take some travel cash with you.

How do I get to the surf camp?

If you’re travelling by public transport, take the metro or the bus to Póvoa de Varzim. We offer free shuttles from there, just let us know your planned arrival time and we’ll arrange the rest for you!

Would you recommend to book a rental car?

The surf camp is situated directly on the beach, approximately 3 kilometres away from the little village Estela. We’re offering free shuttles from Póvoa de Varzim for all guests and organise different trips which can be joined by everyone without an own means of transport. Taxi companies are fairly cheap in the North of Portugal, so there is many ways of getting around without needing a rental car.

Which facilities of the campsite can I use?

As a guest of our surf camp you are also a guest of the campsite, therefore you can use all facilities the Orbitur campsite provides. On spot you’ll find a swimming pool, a sports court, a restaurant, a bar/café, a little supermarket, a games room, laundry machines, wash basins and sanitary blocks with toilets and showers with 24 hours hot water.

Is there WIFI?

At the campsite reception you’ll find free WIFI.

Can I pay via bank card while I’m on the camp?

We’ll keep track of your additional expenses on camp (like drinks, add-on activities or lunch packages) and you can pay your end bill via card or cash. You will be able to pay most other things by card, but make sure to have some cash on you for little groceries from the campsite shop or taxi fees.

What facilities are there on the surf camp?

On the surf camp you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen, a chill-out area with loungers and hammocks, some slack-lines and Indo-boards, a miniramp and a relax tent with floor pillows.

What does my tent come with?

Each tipi tent comes with storage space for your clothes, electricity and light. The beds are fully set up with comfortable mattresses, bedding and cotton linen.

What do I need to bring?

We’ll provide bedding, but please don’t forget to bring towels to shower and for the beach. As the nights in the North of Portugal are usually rather cool, don’t forget to bring warm clothes for the evenings!

I booked a shared tent, who is staying in there with me?

We have a shared ladies’, a shared mens’ and a shared mixed tipi. If you rather want to stay in a tent with other people of your gender, please let us know while you’re booking so we can take that into consideration.

We are a family of more than 4 persons, is the accommodation big enough for us?

Our family tipis are set up with four beds, so if you need more sleeping places, you can book an additional mini tipi for your family. The mini tipi will be located close to your main tent and comes with two extra beds with mattresses, bedding and linen.

Is there drinking water available?

The tap water on the campsite is of drinking water quality, so you can use it for drinking, cooking and washing all the same. On the surf camp you can buy re-usable & plastic free drinking bottles to take water with you, wherever you go!

I am vegetarian, are there food options for me?

Our kitchen team caters for vegan and vegetarian diets, too. Just let us know your food preference while booking and we’ll make sure to have the right kind of food for you.

What can I expect for breakfast?

Breakfast is the most important meal on a surf camp, therefore you’ll find a big selection of food in the mornings. A typical breakfast buffet includes coffee, tea, different juices, milk, oats, cornflakes, yoghurt, fruit, cheese, ham, butter, sweet spreads and bread. We also offer daily varying home-made specials and pastry, be surprised!

Is the dinner child-friendly?

Our chef cooks international meals throughout the week, like Mexican wraps, Italian pasta, Indian curry or a Portuguese BBQ. If your children prefer plainer food, please check with our kitchen staff, so they know to put something on the side for you!

What options are there for lunch?

For lunch you can sign up for our home-made lunch packages including sandwiches, fruit and a drink of your choice. If you prefer to cook yourself, you can use our fully equipped kitchen. If you want to try the Portuguese cuisine, you can visit the campsite restaurant and enjoy a non- expensive meal there, too.

What activities are there for my kids?

In our family camp the kids won’t get bored easily! They can climb in the pine trees, grab a skateboard and try our miniramp, play different card and board games, use the slack lines and Indo boards or join our weekly camp activities like the olympic beach games or the kids movie night. Of course, you can also use the campsite’s swimming pool, game room and sports courts.

I really would like to visit Porto, is that possible?

Once a week we organise a trip to the beautiful city of Porto. Here we’ll take you on a little tour through the city center, do a port wine tasting and eat some Portuguese tapas. You can sign up for the city trip upon arrival.

I’m travelling by myself, will it be easy to connect to the rest of the group?

Many of our guests are solo travellers. The shared accommodations and the light-hearted vibe of the surf camp are making it easy to find access. Throughout the week we also organise different activities, which give you the chance to get to know your fellow surfers even better.

Am I insured for the activities?

Your booking includes a surf lesson insurance, which insures you during the official lesson times. We recommend a travel insurance which covers for every other activity throughout your holiday.

How big are the surf groups?

The surf groups for adults have a maximum capacity of 8 students per instructor. We’ll divide the groups according to your experience level to ensure you the biggest learning progress. The kids are taught in groups of 3-4 kids per instructor, usually divided by level and age.

How does the free surfing work?

You can use the surf equipment (wetsuits and surfboard) throughout your whole stay in- and outside of the surf lessons. As we’re based on a beach without lifeguards, we strongly advise you to check the conditions with your surf instructor before you go surfing by yourself.

In which languages are the surf lessons taught?

Our surf lessons usually take place in English, but our surf instructors also speak German, French and Dutch. If you don’t feel confident enough in your English, please let us know while booking so we can guarantee your surf instructor giving you individual feedback in the right language.

In the kids groups, we’re trying to group kids with the same language together, so the lessons can be held in German, French or Dutch.

What can I do next to the surf lessons?

Next to the surf lessons, there are many different activities to choose from. We offer yoga classes, fitness programs, massages and camp activities. You can relax in a hammock, use our slack lines and Indo boards, take a long walk on the quiet beach or play a round of beach volleyball with other active guests.

How far is the beach from the camp?

The beach is a 2 minute walk from the camp. As the campsite is surrounded by a golf course, two concrete tunnels at the West end of the campsite provide a quick and effortless way to the beach leading its way underneath the green.

Is there any shade on the beach?

At our beach spot we set up two shadow tents for everyone who needs a little bit of cooling shade in the heat of the day. On the camp, we have a selection of free parasols and windbreakers to borrow for our guest, too.
